Sihh 2017 previews: Panerai, a plunge into the past

1-pam685_687_cat_group01_b_1461537Two Special Editions of the Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio - 47 mm take their inspiration from a rare Panerai watch from the 1930s. What immediately catches the eye is the dodecagonal bezel with its bevelled and polished corners and the same engraving as the historical models, made in the font of the time. The engraving, "Officine Panerai - Brevettato", referred to the patent for the Radiomir luminescent substance used on the dial and suggests that the watches were used not in the course of military operations but rather for presentation to the authorities of the Royal Italian Navy who were testing new instruments intended for missions. The dial is available in black and shaded brown. The latter shade recalls the lightening effect that the radioactive luminescent substance Radiomir had over time on the originally black dials. Today, it is of course replaced by SuperLuminova, which is harmless to health. The movement used is the calibre P.3000, mechanical with manual winding. Both models are made of stainless steel (AISI 316L). The thin flush lugs are removable, so that the untreated brown leather strap can be changed.
