Cuervo y Sobrinos presents the 2020 Latino Award to Javier Sotomayor

The Palacio del Segundo Cabo, which houses the Centro para interpretación de las relaciones culturales de Cuba-Europa de la Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana (Centre for the Interpretation of Cuba-European Cultural Relations of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana), hosted the cermony to present the 2020 Latino Award to high jump champion Javier Sotomayor on 13 January 2021. The Latino Award was created in 2003 with the aim of honouring Latin personalities who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields at an international level. Past award-winning personalities include film director Pedro Almodóvar, actors Andy García and Antonio Banderas, dancer, choreographer and ballet director Carlos Acosta, musician and pianist Chucho Valdés and Havana city historian Dr Eusebio Leal Spengler, among others. This year Cuervo y Sobrinos, as mentioned, pays tribute to Javier Sotomayor, world record holder in the high jump (2.45 metres) since 1993. Javier Sotomayor is a monument of Cuban sport and can boast an impressive list of achievements: Olympic champion in 1992 and six times world champion (twice outdoors and four times indoors), the Cuban champion also holds the world indoor record, with a jump of 2.43 metres achieved in 1989. The athlete has achieved seven of the ten best outdoor jumps of all time and four of the ten best indoor jumps. 'El príncipe de las alturas' (The prince of heights), recipient of the honour, said: 'I thank you for this recognition: my legacy is not as old as that of Cuervo y Sobrinos, but I am nevertheless proud of my 30-year career'. To honour his sporting career and his still unmatched performances, Cuervo y Sobrinos' master watchmakers have created an exclusive customised watch: a Vuelo GMT with a unique dial and case middle. The dial of the watch is decorated with the personal logo bearing Javier Sotomayor's record and the height of the jump; the sapphire window on the back is decorated with the "Latino Award Cuervo y Sobrinos" logo. Finally, the oscillating weight bears an engraving that includes all the specifications of Sotomayor's record: date (27 July 1993), place (Salamanca) and the words "High Jump World Record".
