The universe of Glashütte Original

On 6, 7 and 8 October 2015, five members of L'Orologio Club had the opportunity to visit the Glashütte Original Manufacture, not far from Dresden. This is where all the components used in the brand's watches are made, with the exception of the cases and dials (made in another of the company's plants, which is, however, located in Pforzheim) and a few other details such as the rubies or the balance spring (supplied by a company of the Swatch Group, to which the German company belongs). The first step in understanding how a watch manufactory works is to visit the department where the prototypes of new watches are made and the tools that will be used for actual production are manufactured. And it is from here that the tour of the workshops distributed over the different floors of the building began. This was followed by the decoration and polishing department up to the assembly workshop, which is divided into simple and complicated models and where, however, it is not possible to enter as the watchmakers work in a clean environment, with air filtration and overpressure to prevent dust from entering from outside. The visit programme also includes a tour of the Glashütte watchmaking museum, which preserves the legacy of a tradition that began in 1845.
