Swatch - Mika 4 Swatch

The new Swatch Art Specials, created with post-modern pop star Mika, were presented yesterday in Venice. Swatch invited the singer (who is 30 years old like the brand) to join the long list of painters, sculptors, video artists, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, designers and conceptual artists (from Keith Haring and Kiki Picasso to Fafi, Rankin, Jean-Michel Othoniel and Moby) who have collaborated with Swatch to create "wearable art".

Mika has developed two different models, both of which express his idea of the watch as a totemic object. Each of Mika's two watches (Kukulakuki and Kukulakuku) features a lively pattern with simple lines on the strap and an image that recalls a traditional African tribal mask on the dial. "The graphics are a mix of styles that can be found in Morocco, Tunisia and other parts of Africa and Oceania," said Mika. "The heads of the tribal masks are a mix of inspirations, it is difficult to identify what they could be. But this is of little importance as they serve the same function: they are there to inspire curiosity and awe. This was one of the key points of our idea. We wanted the object to be perceived as something mystical'. This theme is echoed in the mask included in the Special Packaging for the limited edition Kukulakuki.
