Vacheron Constantin on show

Vacheron Constantin
Repeat quarters 1816

Until 14 December 2020, the History of Science Museum in Oxford (UK) will host an exhibition on time and its measurement conceived by the Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA) and entitled "The Heartbeat of the City: 500 Years of Personal Time". For this event, celebrating 1,000 years of mechanical watchmaking and 500 years of Swiss watchmaking, Vacheron Constantin is offering a selection of 12 historical timepieces from its private collection. These include one of its very first pocket watches with a striking mechanism, a 1816 quarter-repeating pocket watch model and an extremely rare square watch for the blind made in 1964. In addition to the selection of historical timepieces, a monumental kinetic sculpture depicting the ingenious mechanical lever escapement system is on display. The programme also includes a series of lectures and some virtual reality experiments, in line with the IDA's vocation to put digital technologies at the service of history. Next stop for the travelling exhibition will be New York in spring 2021.
