Blancpain launches the Female Fifty Fathoms Photographic Award

This new OPA category aims to recognise the merits of women in ocean photography with the intention of inspiring future generations. Produced by Oceanographic magazine to support the ocean conservation charity SeaLegacy, the annual Ocean Photography Awards competition aims to show everyone the beauty of the oceans and illustrate the countless dangers to which they are exposed. To achieve this goal, the competition is open to anyone who knows how to use a lens to capture the various aspects of the ocean. Everyone can participate in the competition: amateurs and professionals, divers and surfers, young and old. It includes six categories, deliberately open to interpretation, but also an overall award, that of Ocean Photographer of the Year. The 2021 programme also includes a major innovation: the introduction of an additional category, the Female Fifty Fathoms Award, an award established and awarded by Blancpain. Although inclusive, the Ocean Photography Awards competition sees a majority of men among the participants. Through the Female Fifty Fathoms Award, Blancpain and OPA therefore wish to encourage women to share their insight into the underwater world and to promote their involvement in diving, ocean photography and ocean conservation awareness to inspire future generations. Female Fifty Fathoms Award nominees must be nominated by a person for whom they represent a source of inspiration. The chosen female photographers, who confirm their participation, will be evaluated following the standard stages of the Ocean Photography Awards competition. In addition to numerous prizes, the announced winner will receive a timepiece from Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms dive watch collection and will also benefit from a presence on the House's platforms and in its media designed to raise public awareness of the beauty of the oceans. Her name will thus be associated with that of famous photographers, such as Ernest H. Brooks II or Ellen Cuylaerts, who both contribute to the publications of Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms Editions. The Female Fifty Fathoms Award will celebrate uncompromising femininity and is aimed at all innovative women who push their own limits; pioneering and passionate women who possess an avant-garde spirit and are committed to saving the oceans.
