Zeitwerk: What changes in Lange's most unconventional watch?

A. Lange & Söhne launches the second generation of the Zeitwerk, the first mechanical watch with a constant-force escapement and a numerical display with 'jumping exactly' digits.

A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk

First launched in 2009, the Zeitwerk can be considered A. Lange & Söhne's most avant-garde interpretation of watchmaking. The digital hour and minute display was a brand-new design that echoed one of the brand's historical figures: the large date display, whose design inspired the Zeitwerk's hour and minute windows.

After 13 years, Lange presents the new generation of this model with a slightly reworked design and, above all, with a more evolved movement, the calibre L043.6, which doubles the power reserve from 36 to 72 hours, thanks to the construction of a patented barrel with two winding springs. Fundamental when one considers that the maximum amount of energy is required to allow the three large discs of the numerals (one of which indicates the hours and the others the ten-minute and single-minute intervals in a fraction of a second) to advance instantaneously. This does not change the patented tensioning mechanism, which acts as a regulator for the advance of the hours and minutes.

The ease of use for setting the time is improved by the introduction of a push-button at 4 o'clock that allows the display to be advanced quickly and separately: a function already introduced in the Zeitwerk Date.

The economy of the dial fully reflects the stylistic language of this collection. The only changes concern the reworking of the nickel-silver hour bridge, which extends across the entire width of the dial to give more space to the auxiliary small seconds subdial, while in the power-reserve indicator, at 12 o'clock, the last 12 hours are now marked in red to indicate even more clearly that the tension in the mainspring is about to end. It is offered in two versions: in rose gold with a black dial and natural nickel-silver hour bridge; in platinum with a rhodium-plated solid silver dial and black rhodium-plated hour bridge.
