On 24 May 1962, Commander Scott Carpenter made three orbits around the Earth aboard the Aurora 7 capsule. On his wrist, he wore a Navitimer equipped with a 24-hour graduation enabling him to distinguish day from night, something indispensable in space. That pioneer of space conquest became part of the Breitling collections under the name Cosmonaute. Having celebrated its 50th anniversary since its baptism of the air in 2012, the Navitimer Cosmonaute continues its odyssey in a new, highly original version equipped with a blackened steel case, a feature achieved by means of a high-resistance carbon-based coating. The dial and counters of the high-performance chronograph feature the same black colour, enlivened by luminescent indications and red hands. The IWC-manufactured B02 calibre, chronometer-certified by the COSC, has two special features faithful to the original model: manual winding and a 24-hour display. The Navitimer's famous circular slide rule enables all navigation-related operations to be carried out on the wrist. The caseback bears the official insignia of the Aurora 7 mission. Produced in 1,000 numbered pieces, the Navitimer Cosmonaute Blacksteel is fitted with a black rubber strap that reinforces its virile and technological look.
