The Gucci Grip Project

Fruit of Alessandro Michele's creative vision, Gucci's Grip watch takes its inspiration from the "grip tape" that skaters use on their boards: the name is in fact a reference to the way the watch firmly wraps around the wrist. Now the Grip is back on Gucci's social platforms with a series of special portraits and short videos. Last year the watch was immortalised within various skateboarding communities globally; today, Alessandro Michele has invited various talents from the international street sport scene to share their personal stories and take part in a visual exploration of their world. The watch is shown on the wrist of a group of people in different international cities, namely Paris, Berlin and Chengdu, but also New York and Los Angeles. Among them are Leo Baker, professional non-binary skater and US activist, and Cher Strauberry, musician and skateboarding prodigy from an early age. They are joined by Paperboy Prince, a rapper with a passion for basketball, as well as dancer Sulian Rios from Paris, roller-skater Sara Lancerio from Berlin and Chinese longboarder Duo Duo. Collaborating photographers include Marie Tomanova from New York, Miriam Marlene Waldner from Berlin and Brad Elterman, who specialises in documenting pop, punk and rock bands in Hollywood. To celebrate this initiative, seven versions of the Grip watch will make their debut in the section of the Gucci App that allows customers to virtually "try on" the House's watches. Through augmented reality technology, available on iOS devices, users have the chance to discover what the watch will look like once worn, simply by pointing the device's camera at their wrist.
