Longines: an eye on the past

With the Heritage Military Marine Nationale, Longines revives its historic Ref. 5774 made in the 1940s for the French navy. The new model, 38.50 mm in diameter, has the same bold character as the watch it is inspired by, with its cognac leather strap and opaline gold dial, while meeting contemporary aesthetic and technical standards. The detail that does not go unnoticed is the distinctive shape of the counterweighted seconds hand. Other features in common with the specimen of the past are the indication "Longines FAB. SUISSE", an abbreviation of "Fabbrication suisse", i.e. "Swiss manufacture", on the dial (including the absence of the date window) and the reference to the Marine Nationale on the caseback. Still in the spirit of the original timepiece, the caseback of the current version is screw-down and the domed sapphire crystal "box" overlooks the slightly grained dial, where the hour circle and hands are coated with brown SuperLumiNova. While Ref. 5774 used the historic Longines 12.68N movement, the Heritage Military Marine Nationale houses an automatic movement, calibre L888.5, developed exclusively for the Maison and equipped with a silicon balance spring. Price: 1,950 euros.
