TheRalph Lauren RL Automotive is loosely inspired by the 1938 Bugatti Model 57SC Atlantic Coupé, which belonged to the New York designer's car collection. It is a smaller-sized evolution of the previous version launched only the year before: 38.7 mm against 44.8. The sandblasted gunmetal-black stainless steel case features the singular and distinctive hand-carved amboine burl bezel (as in the 2015 model) and secured by six slotted screws, inspired by the car's dashboard instrumentation. The layout of a matt oxidised black dial with Arabic numerals and RL logo at 12 o'clock in beige SuperLuminova, gladius hands, small seconds counter at 6 o'clock and black alligator strap with Alsavel lining are unchanged. In view of the downsizing, the calibre is now the hand-wound RL701 from Jaeger-LeCoultre.
