The great hang-gliding world champion, who died a year ago in a tragic plane crash while on board an ultralight as a passenger, was linked to us by a profound relationship, having followed with great interest his last feat, which we have reported on extensively in several issues of our magazine.
Laura Mancuso, his wife, whom we interviewed in issue 156 of L'OROLOGIO, through the Angelo D'Arrigo Foundationestablished less than a month after the recordman's death, continues to carry on the projects of her husband who wanted to concretely help people in Peru.
One of the Foundation's main aims is to raise funds that will be directed towards humanitarian assistance projects.
Among the initiatives in Angelo's memory, the Foundation, in collaboration with Terepia - cultural association, set up to research, organise and disseminate original forms of entertainment aimed at recovering and renewing the culture of figure theatre - and the Italian Free Flight Federation, will organise an evening in memory of the great champion on 28 September in Padua. Also present at the event will be Laura Mancuso, who, together with members of the Terepia association and political and civic personalities, will watch the projection of an evocative video on her husband's exploits, his flights over the world's highest peaks, the records he set, fragments of his life in contact with birds of prey, and his imprinting techniques.
The screening of the video, which will start at 9 p.m. at the Piccolo Teatro in via Asolo, will be followed by a performance entitled 'Flight', based on two famous works by Richard Bach ('No Place is Far Away' and 'The Seagull Johnatan Livingston').
In addition, we would like to recall the appeal by the Catania journalist Candido Cannavò, who called on the scientific and cultural world to come out in favour of naming Catania International Airport after Angelo d'Arrigo. We at L'OROLOGIO also hope that the initiative will be successful, as a just tribute to a man who dedicated his life to flight, progress and scientific research.
