SIHH 2010: Audemars Piguet preview

Audemars Piguet Millenary Carbon One
Audemars Piguet Millenary Carbon One

We are now close to the next edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, the 20th, which will take place in Geneva from 18 to 22 January 2010. It only remains for us, therefore, to offer you some previews. After Lange's preview, here is now that of Audemars Piguet.

Thanks to the valuable research and development work carried out by the Maison's workshops, we can now admire the Millenary Carbon One, a chronograph with tourbillon device and power reserve display. Already looking at the dial, which is openworked, one perceives that we are dealing with something highly innovative. In fact, the materials used for the movement (which from a visual point of view plays a lot on symmetries, just look at the barrels and their bridges, the sides of the chrono minute counter, at 12 o'clock) are blackened steel for the bridges on the dial side, anodised aluminium for the bridges on the back side, and carbon for the plate. As far as the latter is concerned, it should be emphasised that it is a special type of carbon, subjected to a very high pressure (7,500 N/cm2) at a temperature of 2,400°C, in order to obtain a material with mechanical, physical and chemical stability in all directions. The material used for the case is also very special. It is forged carbon, an ultra-light and resistant material developed, from manufacture to machining, exclusively by Audemars Piguet. Produced in a limited series of 120 pieces, the Millenary Carbon One uses a mechanical movement with manual winding, equipped with a power reserve of 240 hours, a frequency of 21,600 A/h, 336 components (including 30 jewels). The case measures 47×42 mm, while the strap is made of crocodile with a large square-scaled weave and a blackened titanium folding clasp.
