TAG Heuer - Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition

To celebrate its 160th anniversary, TAG Heuer presents the new Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition. The watch features a design reminiscent of the 1960s, enhanced of course by the watchmaking avant-garde of the 21st century. In 1860, Edouard Heuer founded TAG Heuer, then known as Heuer, in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. In the space of 160 years much has changed, but the brand's dedication to innovation and the development of cutting-edge watchmaking creations has remained constant. The collection that is set to receive special attention this year is the Carrera, a line that showcases the brand's most elegant chronographs. These timepieces have been iconic since their introduction almost 60 years ago, conveying the brand's connection to the world of racing and its daring spirit through the decades. To kick off a year of accolades and celebrations, TAG Heuer therefore presents the Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition, of which only 1,860 pieces will be produced. It will be available to customers worldwide from June. The history of the Carrera began in 1962, when the CEO at the time, Jack Heuer, learned about the legendary Carrera Panamericana, one of the most fascinating and treacherous road races in the world. The term 'carrera', which in Spanish can refer indistinctly to a course, a race, a career, caught his attention: he immediately realised it would be the perfect name for a new timepiece. The following year, the first Heuer Carrera chronographs were produced. Jack Heuer wanted the aesthetics of the Heuer Carrera chronograph to be sleek and well-proportioned, making it the perfect watch for drivers who need to be able to take a quick glance at the time during competitions. The famous 1964 model with its three blued counters and starburst silver dial is the ideal choice to celebrate the brand's 160th anniversary. Often referred to as the "2447S", this model is now being reintroduced with some updated adaptations for the 21st century. This new steel-cased chronograph has many of the distinctive features of its predecessor in its design, such as the elegant dial, polished case and pushers. However, the shape is slightly different and the watch measures 39 mm in diameter, instead of the 36 mm of the original model. Given the production differences between the two movements, the 1963 Valjoux 72 and today's Heuer 02, the small seconds indicator is positioned at 6 o'clock instead of 9 o'clock. A further change from the original is the shape of the hour and minute hands, which are now facetted and coated with beige SuperLuminova®. The unmistakable Carrera name and TAG Heuer logo are printed on the dial, which is protected by a domed sapphire crystal, giving the watch a retro look reminiscent of the original 1963 Heuer Carrera. Presented with a black alligator leather strap, this model is limited to 1,860 pieces: a clear reference to the year TAG Heuer was founded. In addition, the words "One of 1860" and "limited edition" are engraved on the caseback. The redesigned oscillating weight, visible through the sapphire crystal screwed onto the caseback, is embellished with a lacquered engraving that marks the timepiece as a celebratory edition. The TAG Heuer Carrera line has always been equipped with the most advanced technology developed by the brand. Probably the most significant difference between the 2447S and the current limited edition version is the movement: the celebratory model is powered by the in-house Heuer 02 calibre. This innovation developed by the company is made entirely in Switzerland at the TAG Heuer manufacture in Chevenez. It incorporates 168 components, including a column wheel and a vertical clutch, figures identifying improved timekeeping and high-quality manufactory-made movements, and boasts a power reserve of no less than 80 hours. The Heuer manufacture movement 02 offers five essential advantages:

- A power reserve of 80 hours: 30 hours more than the Heuer Calibre 01;

- A slimmer movement, which allows for a finer case design and greater comfort for the wearer: the 6.95 mm thickness is in fact less than the 7.30 mm of the Heuer 01;

- The vertical clutch improves the precision of the start and stop functions as well as the movement of the chronograph seconds hand;

- The column wheel ensures a more accurate and precise functionality, perceptible through the smooth click when handling the buttons;

- Precision and greater stability with a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).

The bold, innovative and elegant TAG Heuer Carrera collection, initially conceived for professional drivers, has certainly evolved since its first introduction, but its connection to the world of motorsports, the non-conformist mentality it embodies and its reputation as a pioneer of industry innovation will continue to inspire.
