Cartier ID Two

In a watch movement, as in any other mechanism, only a small percentage of energy is used productively. Factors such as friction, air resistance and dispersions of various kinds considerably reduce the available power: as much as 75% of the energy supplied by the spring is dispersed inside a watch case. Cartier ID One was followed by Cartier ID Two, a second concept watch intended this time to improve the efficiency of a watch movement. The aim was to increase the stored energy by about a third, halving the energy consumption at constant volume. The result can be said to have been achieved, since an additional 30% of stored energy, 50& less power consumption and a power reserve of 32 days were achieved. Also innovative are the materials used, such as CeramystTM for the case. This is a material of the latest generation, an innovative transparent polycrystalline ceramic that gives designers the freedom to create. The Ceramyst TM case also allows one to admire every single element of the matt black movement obtained by using another avant-garde material: ADLC. Added to this is the fact that the Ceramyst ™ transparent ceramic monobloc case itself is entirely vacuum-packed to preserve the regulator mechanism from air resistance. As far as the movement is concerned, it should be noted that for the first time in the history of watchmaking, the springs that supply the energy to the watch movement are not made of metal but of glass microfibre, a material that significantly increases the power supplied. In addition, the Cartier ID Two takes up the solution already pioneered in the Cartier ID One, in that the movement components are manufactured using DRIE technology (Deep Reactive Ion Etching, a deep-etching process that allows micromechanical components to be manufactured with extreme precision and is applied particularly to carbon crystal), while the oscillator and escapement in carbon crystal and the rotating axes in titanium have a black ADLC (Amorphous Diamond Like Carbon) coating, a special mixture of carbon and hydrogen). The case has a diameter of 57 millimetres, while the strap is alligator.
