A trademark of A, Lange & Söhne, the large date, together with the off-centre dial, is one of the hallmarks of the Grande Lange 1. Its latest Lumen version now reveals its mechanism, with a dial partially made of sapphire crystal that makes the large date disc system visible. In addition, the tens disc is coated with a white luminescent substance and the transparent glass unit disc rotates against a background that lights up at night. The special coating of the sapphire crystal dial components blocks most visible light, but is no barrier to ultraviolet light. This allows UV rays to penetrate unhindered into the surfaces of the Big Date that illuminates at night.
