The new Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to the Moonphase touches more than one of our heartstrings. And it is an announced success. Snoopy's word.
Finally, a MoonSwatch that excites me! My passion for the Peanuts strips began as a child and continues now that I am an adult. Incomprehensible to some, I certainly share it with half the world. Personally, I love the philosophical humour of Charles M. Schulz. I only realised how faithful he was to the way children think now that I have a six-year-old daughter. Since she started walking, I recognise in her the movements of Schulz's neurotic children, but also the emotional intelligence, the unfiltered feelings and their perspective on the world.
An entire literature has been written about the Peanuts and it is undeniable that Snoopy's success is due to the strong personality that Schulz infused into the world's most eclectic beagle. Among his imaginary identities (World War I pilot, world-famous lawyer, aspiring writer, tennis player, skater...), there is a very real one.
In the space race years, Snoopy was chosen as the mascot of NASA, which also created an award with his effigy as a (world-famous) astronaut: the Silver Snoopy Award, given to employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to space exploration.
Omega won this award in 1970, for his contribution to the moon landing and, later, the rescue of the Apollo 13 mission. But it was in 2003 that the House decided to dedicate a first Moonwatch to the Silver Snoopy Award, followed by two more, in 2015 and 2020. The first two are now collectors' items, while the 2020 one boasts waiting lists of more than two years.
So, don't be so cynical and don't flaunt disbelief when long queues form outside the Swatch Store to buy the new Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to the Moonphase, inspired by the 2020 Moonwatch Silver Snoopy Award. Because I'm willing to bet you'll be there.
