'The Conquest of Time' - Exhibition and Art Book

From 15 April to 14 June 2015, the Sala Federiciana of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan will host the exhibition 'La Conquista del Tempo' (The Conquest of Time), which traces the history of watchmaking from its origins to the present day through a hundred or so specimens, from the first gnomons to the contemporary marvels of micromechanics. Structured according to a succession of chronological chapters, the exhibition accompanies the visitor through the long path of technical and scientific progress thanks to which it has been possible to achieve the goal of precision. This research has always been accompanied by a constant interest in aesthetics, which, through métiers d'art, has found its highest expression: for the past twenty years, métiers d'art have been the main focus of interest of the Milan-based Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte, which, for this occasion, has partnered with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie for the event at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. During the event, which will take place in conjunction with the Salone del Mobile and EXPO 2015, the book that gave rise to the exhibition will be presented. The book, based on the book of the same name by Dominique Fléchon, historian of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, and published by Marsilio Editori, consists of six chapters tracing the progress made from the first units of measurement imagined by the Babylonians to the technical and precious timepieces of today; six chapters that are also found in the Milan exhibition. Comprising 456 pages and 300 colour illustrations, it will be on sale for 75 euros.
