Mido Multifort: evolution of a style

Mido continues to tell its story through the evolution of Multifort, its longest-lived collection.

In 1934, the Multifort combined four criteria: it was shock-resistant, automatic, antimagnetic and waterproof. From there began the evolution of a collection around which Mido built its image, laying the foundations of its modern production. "Over the years, the Multifort has evolved," the CEO, Franz Linder, told us, "but it still retains that typical masculine and strong character that determined its style at birth.

A watch that, while remaining true to its spirit, has been brought up to date with the tastes of the market and the brand's new orientations, so much so that it has aligned itself with one of the leitmotifs of Mido since 2002: the link with architecture. Hence the identification with the imposing Harbour Bridge in Sydney conceived in 1932. Its main feature, the côtes de Genève on the dial, are reminiscent of the bridge's vertical suspension cables.

"Thinking about the next step," adds Linder, "we said to ourselves: why not show the movements, in small series, not only from the back but also from the dial?". It was with this in mind that the Multifort Skeleton Vertigo was born, revealing the heart of the mechanism by showing the skeleton plate surrounded by an anthracite-coloured surface, where the hour-markers are positioned, decorated with côtes de Genève in vertical stripes.

The calibre 80 was specially developed by ETA according to the requirements of Mido. Thanks to a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and the Nivachron balance spring, which significantly reduces the effect of magnetic fields and guarantees excellent shock resistance, the movement offers attractive chronometric performance and a comfortable 80-hour power reserve.

Made with a 42 mm steel case, the Multifort Skeleton Vertigo is a modern watch, a child of its times, demonstrating the stylistic evolution of the collection, ideally rewinding a thin thread that nevertheless takes us back to the essence of its origins.
