Omega Speedmaster 'First Omega in Space

blogEveryone knows that on Neil Armstrong's wrist when he set foot on the Moon in 1969 was an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. But perhaps not everyone knows that the very first Omega worn in space was the Speedmaster that astronaut Wally Schirra wore during the Mercury Atlas 8 mission in October 1962. Today, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Speedmaster in Earth orbit, Omega has created the Speedmaster "First Omega in Space" in honour of Wally Schirra and his historic watch. In fact, the Speedmaster "First Omega in Space" recalls the timepiece Schirra bought in a Houston jewellery store over half a century ago. The 39.70 mm case in polished and brushed steel is fitted with the famous hand-wound Calibre 1861 (18 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, 45-hour power reserve, Glucydur balance), which has gone down in history as the movement of the legendary Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. Fitted with a brown leather strap with a pin buckle and a sapphire crystal protecting the dial, the Speedmaster "First Omega in Space" will be produced in a limited and numbered edition. On the case back, in addition to the limited edition engraving, we also find the historic Omega hippocampus emblem and the inscriptions 'The first Omega in Space' and 'October 3, 1962', the date of the Mercury Atlas 8 mission.
